The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) is a leading Indian nature conversation organisation committed to the service of nature. With the help of KEPL, WTI has successfully recused several species, including the Asiatic black bear. The Asiatic black bear was listed in Schedule II of India’s Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 as it faces prosecution for its body parts.

The rescued animals are taken to the Centre for Bear Rehabilitation (CBRC): a specialised rehabilitation facility run in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (DoEFCC), Arunachal Pradesh and supported by IFAW, WTI and Kirloskar Ebara Pumps Ltd. (KEPL).

After rescue, the bear cubs are taken to the Centre for Bear Rehabilitation and Conservation (CBRC) and are admitted for hand raising and future release. Post admission, the individuals are screened and monitored for their medical and physical fitness before they are acclimatised and released back into their natural habitat.

With the help of KEPL, WTI achieved the following during July- September 2021:

  • Four bears released in the previous quarter were monitored.
  • Assimilation and release of five bear cubs.
  • “Boxonto”, the lone elephant calf, was being taken care of by CBRC.
  • Development and maintenance of the remaining West wing building of CBRC.
